The American Cancer Society recommends that adults at average risk of colon cancer begin screening at age 45. Screening tests include colonoscopy, sigmoidoscopy, and fecal immunochemical test (FIT).3 Colonoscopy is the most sensitive and specific screening test for colon cancer, but it is also the most invasive. Sigmoidoscopy is less sensitive than colonoscopy, but it is also less invasive. FIT is the least sensitive screening test, but it is also the least invasive.

If a screening test is positive, a colonoscopy will be performed to confirm the diagnosis of colon cancer. Colonoscopy is a procedure in which a thin, flexible tube with a camera on the end is inserted into the colon to visualize the lining of the colon. During colonoscopy, biopsies may be taken to confirm the diagnosis of colon cancer.

The stage of colon cancer is determined by the size and location of the tumor, as well as the presence or absence of lymph node involvement and distant metastases. The stage of colon cancer is an important factor in determining the prognosis and treatment options.4

The treatment of colon cancer depends on the stage of the cancer. Surgery is the primary treatment for colon cancer, and it is usually followed by chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy.5

In recent years, there have been significant advancements in the treatment of colon cancer. New surgical techniques, such as laparoscopic and robotic surgery, have made it possible to perform colon cancer surgery with less pain and scarring. New chemotherapy drugs and radiation therapy techniques have also been developed that are more effective and have fewer side effects.6

As a result of these advancements, the prognosis for patients with colon cancer has improved significantly. The 5-year survival rate for patients with stage I colon cancer is now over 90%.7 The 5-year survival rate for patients with stage IV colon cancer is now over 15%.8

This book provides a comprehensive overview of the latest advancements in the diagnosis and treatment of colon cancer. With in-depth information on screening, diagnostic techniques, surgical approaches, and emerging therapies, this book is an essential resource for healthcare professionals, researchers, and patients seeking the most up-to-date knowledge on colon cancer management.
