The novel begins with the couple, Jack and Jill, receiving the news that their son, Sam, has died in a car accident. They are devastated by the loss, and they struggle to understand how they can possibly go on without him.
Jack and Jill try to find solace in each other, but they are both grieving in their own way. Jack is withdrawn and angry, while Jill is more open and expressive. They both feel guilty for not being able to protect their son, and they wonder if they could have done anything differently.
As the months go by, Jack and Jill slowly begin to heal. They find comfort in talking to each other and in sharing their memories of Sam. They also find solace in helping others who are grieving. They volunteer at a local hospice, and they find that helping others helps them to heal their own wounds.
Small Mercies is a beautifully written and deeply affecting novel. It is a story about love, loss, and redemption. It is a story that will stay with you long after you finish it.
