  • Whoopi Goldberg: A groundbreaking comedian and actress, Goldberg became the first Black woman to win all four major North American entertainment awards (EGOT).
  • Cicely Tyson: A seven-time Emmy Award winner, Tyson is known for her powerful performances in such films as Sounder and The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman.
  • Halle Berry: The first African American woman to win the Academy Award for Best Actress, Berry has starred in a wide range of films, including Monster's Ball, Die Another Day, and Cloud Atlas.

Overcoming Obstacles

The six women profiled in Supreme Actresses all faced significant obstacles in their careers due to their race and gender. Dandridge, for example, was often typecast in stereotypical roles and was denied opportunities to play more complex characters. Horne was told that she would never be a star because of her dark skin.
